Shannon's Logic

by Savoera P.
(Saskatoon, Canada)

About a little over a decade ago I came home with my daughter, Shannon, who was in Pre-K at that time, and went to the same Daycare I used to work for. That day something had happened that her little mind couldn't comprehend.

A teacher had been fired, and she happened to know that teacher. Of course she heard the news from me, which I told her about after picking her up from her classroom. At that time I thought she completely understood when I told her that the teacher got fired. She was upset, but I thought she was just upset because she liked the teacher...

However, when I was telling the story to my husband, she jumped in and asked innocently: "But mommy, I don't understand one thing... when they fired the teacher, was she standing up or lying down?" I was puzzled by her weird question... Then it dawned on me what she meant, and I burst out laughing. So, that's why she was so upset! Apparently she thought that being "fired" meant either being burned like a witch at the stake (standing up) or being cremated (lying down). :)

Hello Savoera,

Thank you so much for sharing this amusing anecdote. How old was Shannon at that time? Poor kid, I can imagine why she became upset.
